Background Information
The Love Language project has been co-funded by the European Union’s Gruntvig Programme. The project was led by Austria with a partnership consisting of France, the UK, Norway, Latvia, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, Czech Republic, Spain, Iceland and Romania. Further details of the partnership and the free products are available on the website www.love-language.org
The overall objective of the project is to enable young male adults with particular "foreign language learning resistance" to establish their "love for language" by using more 'male' focused language lessons to increase their interest in language learning and reduce the drop out rate. The products consist of a tool box with adaptable lesson ideas and a handbook for people interested in a more detailed look into motivating male students.
Increasing language uptake is especially topical at the moment. Due to the recent fall in numbers of pupils taking languages at GCSE England has now got an agenda to increase participation in foreign language learning with a participation benchmark (non-mandatory) of 50-90% of KS4 students. In addition two performance indicators for languages are to be included in the KS4 league tables measuring attainment at Level 2 (GCSE A*-C and equivalent) and participation and attainment at Level 1(GCSE D-G and equivalent). This means that, to be counted in the indicators, pupils must have achieved any approved Level 1 or 2 qualification – for example GCSE, NVQ, Asset Languages etc. www.dcsf.gov.uk/performancetables
