Keynote Speakers:

Barry Jones:'Boys learning a foreign language; what they say works!'
Until his recent retirement, Barry was responsible for three Modern Languages’ teacher-training courses. He continues to train student-teachers part-time, is active in INSET and is a regional trainer for the national DCSF/CILT Strategic Learning Networks’ programme. He is also working on a set of Europe-wide competences for initial training in MFL for the Council of Europe. He has published books and articles on many aspects of Modern Language teaching and learning.

Simon Green: 'Effective Strategies to engage language learners in KS3/KS4'
Following a career in teaching French and German in secondary schools, Simon joined Leeds Trinity and All Saints as a teacher trainer in the early 1990s. In 1994 he became Coordinator of the Comenius Centre in Leeds. He has delivered many training courses for teachers of MFL in KS3/KS4 and for A Level. He is also the author of a number of books and articles to do with modern languages teaching.

Tom Barwood - 'Foreign Languages? - Not me, mate!'
After six years working in Marketing and Advertising followed by three years working around the world, Tom embarked on a teaching career. Following his classroom experiences he became a freelance trainer, working with students and teachers in nearly 600 schools across Britain, Europe and the Middle East. He specialises in the fields of motivation, self-esteem, thinking and learning skills, accelerated learning, employability and dealing with student disaffection, particularly amongst boys.

Graham Davies - 'Engaging language learners with ICT'
Graham began teaching languages in secondary schools before moving into higher education at Ealing College where he taught German and managed the multimedia language centre. He has lectured and run ICT training courses for language teachers in 22 countries and sits on several national and international boards and committees. He has been involved in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) since 1976 and wrote one of the first introductory books on computers in language learning in 1982. He was the founder president of EUROCALL and is actively involved with WorldCALL. Graham remains an Emeritus Professor of Computer Assisted Language Learning and occasional examiner of postgraduate students.

Ruth Linden - 'The use of languages at work'
Ruth’s main focus is on the application of languages within business. She gained a BA Hons in Communication Studies and also trained as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). In 1988 she established The Park Language Centre, a training organisation in Sheffield which teaches English for overseas visitors along with a range of languages for businesses, public sector clients and individuals. Ruth oversaw the design and delivery of an NVQ language programme in various languages for the Department of Education and Skills and during this time also qualified as an NVQ Assessor. After 14 years in charge, Ruth left The Park Language Centre and became one of the initial staff to work on and develop the Regional Language Network Yorkshire and The Humber (RLNYH).

Bev Whiteside - 'Motivating language learners through sport'
Bev is a languages teacher and spent 11 years teaching languages in a Sports College in the West Midlands. Prior to taking up the post of Development Coordinator – Languages and Sport for the Youth Sport Trust in January 2007, Bev had been Head of German and subsequently Head of Languages for five years. Her role now is to support the network of Sports Colleges in developing ideas and strategies to use the specialism of sport to raise the profile of languages and increase take up at Key Stage 4.
